HOARDE

Well met adventurer!

The game of HOARDE is named after the great adventurer Ignatius Hoarde, the only surviving member of the Slayers of Ruune. The cards in the game denote various items of treasure from Hoarde's extensive collection; including weapons, loot, slain monster trophies, and cherished keepsakes of his fallen party.

The aim of the game is to finish your turn with a set of 3 matching cards.

Every card has a COLOUR, an ITEM category, and a MONETARY VALUE. You can choose to match COLOUR, ITEM, or MONETARY VALUE to make a set.

Set Up

Form the DECK by shuffling all the cards that say 'HOARDE' on the back; only include cards that either have the      symbol in the bottom right, or no symbol. Do not include any cards that have a      symbol.

Deal each player 3 cards face down.

Place the remaining cards face down in the middle, this is the DECK. Your DISCARD PILE will be beside the DECK. Any cards that go into the DISCARD PILE are placed face up.

Roll initiative to determine who goes first. Play can proceed in clockwise order or in initiative order, Game Master's choice.

On Your Turn

1. Pick up a card from either the top of the DECK or the top of the DISCARD PILE

2. Place a card from your hand on the DISCARD PILE. You cannot discard the card you picked up this turn

3. If at the end of your turn you have a matching set of 3 cards in your hand place them down in front of you. YOU WIN!

If at any point you run out of cards in the DECK just shuffle the DISCARD PILE to create a new DECK.

You may NOT look through the DISCARD DECK to remember what cards have already been played. Only the top card of the DISCARD DECK is visible.

Feel Like Cheating?

There are times in the game when you might really want to discard the card you just picked up instead of one from your hand. If you are feeling particularly stealthy you can attempt to do just that. The Game Master decides what type of check to do to determine your success (e.g. for Dungeons and Dragons: slight of hand check).

Just be careful not to get caught.

Game Masters decide what to do with cheaters.

If you feel like cheating in other ways feel free to ask your Game Master. They have final say in how far you can press your luck.

Enchant Your Deck

This particular deck seems to have been owned by Ignatius Hoarde himself, and he's made some adjustments. Folks that have played with these cards have noticed some odd occurrences after the game is over...

Remove any cards from the deck with a      symbol and add any cards with a      symbol.

Some of the cards denote cursed objects, these will have a       symbol in the bottom left corner. Ignatius has also made notes on some of the cards. Each note mentions one of the members of his fallen party.

Players can now choose to win by making a set of 3 CURSED cards, or by a set of 3 CHARACTER cards. If you are making a set of CHARACTER cards all 3 cards must say the same name (i.e. all cards say 'AMARA').

If a player wins via a set of CURSED cards their character becomes cursed. The Game Master decides what the curse and its duration will be. Give the player the 'CURSED' card as a reminder (there are also curse ideas on the card).

If a player wins with a set of CHARACTER cards they are granted a BOON. Give the player the matching CHARACTER'S 'BOON' card as a reminder. The Game Master may alter the BOON to better match the game system if necessary.

You can still choose to match COLOUR, ITEM, or MONETARY VALUE while playing with the ENCHANTED DECK.

Clarifications

A matching set means you have 3 cards with exactly the same word, number, or symbol on all 3 cards. I.e. all 3 cards say the word PINK.

A card that says DAGGER is not the same set as a card that says WEAPON.

While it is possible to be dealt a matching set during game set up, you cannot win instantly. You can only win at the end of your turn. Which means that, unless you feel like cheating, you will have to discard one of the set during your first turn.

Play the game by itself

You don't have to play a TTRPG to play HOARDE. The base DECK can be played as a completely stand-alone game. Just don't include the option to cheat. You can even play with the enchanted deck (there just won't be boons or curses after the game).

Card Odds

There are 144 possible winning hand combinations in the base DECK, and 169 possible winning hand combinations in the enchanted DECK. Each COLOUR, ITEM, and MONETARY VALUE appears 4 times in the DECK (you only need to find 3 to win).

Each CHARACTER name appears 3 times in the enchanted DECK (you need to find all of them to win). You are statistically less likely to pick up a CHARACTER card than any other set in the DECK. But a BOON would be nice.

There are 6 CURSED cards in the DECK (you only need to find 3 to win). You are statistically more likely to pick up a CURSED card than any other set in the DECK. But is it worth the price?

Thank you to all my game testers! Especially Noise, Hayley, Adam, Moo, and Ben.

Have a question about the game? Or want to suggest a curse?
